First Dog to Defect from North Korea

Aug 16 2012

Yellow Sea Islands :: HDR

A boat of 21 North Korean refugees was recently discovered off the coast of a South Korean island near the disputed Yellow Sea border. In what is the first case of canine defection from the north, South Korean officials were surprised to see a dog with the refugees. The castaway pup apparently belongs to one of the refugees who didn't want to leave him behind.

He obviously cared about it enough not to leave it behind but we don't know how we are going to deal with a dog. Seeing it on the boat was a great surprise. [South Korean Immigration Official]

The dog will likely spend months in quarantine, but if his human papa is granted asylum in South Korea, he has an excellent chance of staying as well. Let's hope this story has a happy ending.
