We usually stick to happy stories here but we want everyone to say a prayer for poor ACE, named after the ACE hardware store where he was found huddling in a corner suffering from abuse and starvation. The owner of the store notified animal control but regrets that decision now knowing the fate of what appeared to be a scared and harmless dog.
The City's policy is to put down dogs that are not claimed within four days of being brought to the animal control facility. Despite public outcry, several people coming forward to claim him, a rescue group offering to foster him and even an injunction preventing any pit bulls resembling him being put down until a hearing on the sixteenth, ACE was euthanized. Animal control officials have stated that they didn't receive the documents before ACE was put down.
The public outcry has reached almost deafening proportions with some now working to change the laws that led to ACE's death. "It's just a shame that the bureaucratic nightmare of Detroit is causing the death of animals who could very well find homes," lamented the attorney of a woman who claimed ACE was her fur baby. "I don't know what anyone would have to gain by killing a dog before they have to."
Two sad paws up to The Detroit News for the scoop and their coverage of this rapidly evolving story.
