A Special Message: Adopt a Furry Friend This Holiday Season

Aug 16 2012

As the last leaves fall to the ground and into the leaf collectors (what my human papa refers to as gutters), it is time to snuggle up with the ones you hold most dear to celebrate Thanksgiving and all of the other wonderful holidays to come. I love this time of year: the smell of leaves, winter in the air, Thanksgiving dinner, baked goods and an endless variety of treats that make me slobber so much that my human mama has to wipe my little jowls. And this is just the beginning! Christmas, Hanukkah and other wonderful holidays will be upon us soon. I can already smell the Christmas trees and see the amazing, sparkly lights inside and out that will decorate my territory. And there will be so many more treats for my eyes, nose and ears to digest. I think I'm going to howl!

I have an amazing home with many warm laps to occupy and undoubtedly a few too many tasty treats (as my lady veterinarian will tell you). Some of my fur brothers and sisters are not so fortunate because they have not found a furever home yet. Many of them have had a rough life and just want someone to love. All of them have a unique story to tell and personalities that will light up any room. Dear humans, if you have been considering a new furry friend, this is the best time of year to follow through.

You won't actually find a pet. You will find a dear friend who has been waiting for this moment all along. As I have said before, us dogs (and even our secret friends - cats) know there is a special connection with our human friends. We can sense danger when you can't, understand your feelings when words can't possibly convey meaning and support you with a furry shoulder through the very best and worst moments of your life. We do this because we love you - unconditionally. All we want in return is your love. We seek it and crave it even more than our beloved treats.

Your local shelter is the best place to start, but the Internet is also a great resource. Here at Pet Pawfection and The Lap Pack, we have many friends that devote their lives to helping dogs and cats in need. We lovingly refer to them as our Not-So-Furry Godmothers and Godfathers. They are all honorary members of our pack. I would like to highlight one of them today: The Shelter Pet Project. For starters, you can go to their website and start the search for your new friend. You can search by zip code for pets or shelters near you!

The Shelter Pet Project is a collaborative effort between The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie's Fund and The Ad Council. Their goal is "to make shelters the first place potential adopters turn when looking to get a new pet, ensuring that all healthy and treatable pets find loving homes." They do this "by breaking down misconceptions surrounding shelter pets and communicating that 'A person is the best thing to happen to a shelter pet. Be that person. Adopt.'"

In addition to the dog, cat and shelter locators, you will enjoy some wonderful adoption stories. One of the latest stories introduces Max, the recycling Black Lab. He seeks out cans and bottles and deposits them in the nearest recycling container while on walks. Add that special talent to his already wonderful personality and you have an amazing fur brother. The best part of the story is that Max was adopted and found his furever home.

Max is only the tip of the tail. There are so many other fur brothers and sisters out there with special talents and big hearts. So what are you waiting for? Your dearest friend wants to come home!

In the meantime, you can help by liking The Shelter Project on Facebook, following on Twitter and sharing their message with your friends and family. Also, please donate your time and a few bucks to your favorite pet charity if you can. Every little bit helps and could mean one more furry life saved! I leave you with this great message...
